The school was founded in 1970 as a nonprofit institution, orginally named Montessori of West Los Angeles, by a group of educators and business professionals who strongly believed in the educational philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori. In October of 1989, the name was changed to TURNINGPOINT to represent the series of turning points that children and schools experience as they grown and mature.

The school strives to address the comprehensive educational needs of the whole, multi-faceted child. At TURNINGPOINT, the child is the focus, the teacher the facilitator. The academic, emotional, physical and social unfolding of each child is fostered through a carefully balanced, developmentally appropriate curriculum. Rich learning experiences are designed to inspire creative expression and to promote critical thinking. Students learn cooperation as well as individual projects. This encourages good citizenship and leadership qualities necessary to effectively and ethically participate in an ever-changing world.

Additionally, TURNINGPOINT emphasizes a strong partnership between home and school, recognizing this partnership as a source of its vitality and strength. Thus, each child's positive self-esteem is nurtured in a warm, inclusive community setting.

The Primary Division is Montessori-based and provides a prepared environment that guides and directs young children through their sensitive periods of development.

The Elementary Division expands on previous learning experiences, promotes the concept of self-growth and discovery, while preparing students to meet the academic and personal challenges of seventh grade and beyond.

The Middle School creates a small community for learning where stable, close, mutually respectful relationships with adults and peers are considered fundamental for intellectual development, and cognitive and personal growth. At all levels TURNINGPOINT instills in its students a sense of integrity and a joy of lifelong learning.
