Current Status

Turning Point School welcomed our Preschool - Grade 8 students back to campus for in-person learning on Monday, August 30, 2021.

We continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation in our community carefully and take proactive and prudent measures to promote the health and safety of every member of our community.

Please see the updates below for more information on our operating policies and procedures as well as links to recent updates to our community.

Please click here for the school's COVID-19 Guidance Checklist per public health directive from the State of California Safe Schools for All Team.

Policies and Procedures

We continue to embrace and follow a swiss cheese model of pandemic defense in keeping our community as healthy as possible. The many layers of protection we employ—surveillance testing, face covering, physical distancing, handwashing, ventilation, and frequent cleaning—work together to significantly reduce the overall risk of transmission.

Please click on the headings below to expand text:

Face Coverings

INDOORS: Beginning Monday, March 14, 2022, masks are optional indoors, per public health policies.

  • Exception: In the event of exposure to a close contact, anyone who is required to quarantine (I.e., students who are not vaccinated or whose vaccinations are not up-to-date) must wear a mask indoors for five additional days, from days 6-10, per public health policy.

OUTDOORS: Masks are optional outdoors, per public health policies.

PROPER FACE COVERINGS

  • Can be cloth, surgical, KN95, or N95.

  • Should fit securely under the chin and fit snugly against the side of the face, enclosing the mouth and nose.

  • Should be comfortable and allow for normal breathing without undue difficulty.

  • Should be replaced every day.

  • Should not have vents, valves, or inappropriate markings.

MASK HYGIENE TIPS

  • Label two sandwich bags, one that says “Clean Masks” and the other that says “Dirty Masks” with a permanent marker or adhesive label. To reduce landfill waste, the sandwich bags can be Ziplock bags (which can be properly cleaned and reused) or reusable sandwich bags.

  • Keep three clean masks in the appropriately labeled bag.

  • Have your child put one clean mask on before arriving at school.

  • When lunch begins, have them place the morning mask that they’ve been wearing in the “Dirty Masks” bag.

  • Then, have them put on a clean mask for the rest of the afternoon.

  • Masks with lanyards can help students avoid placing their masks on shared surfaces or in pockets where they are more likely to fall onto the floor/ground or be cross-contaminated with dirty hands.

Surveillance Testing

As part of our efforts to mitigate COVID-19 virus transmission on campus, COVID-19 PCR tests will be administered to all students and employees on a weekly basis to start the school year (testing frequency may change depending upon local conditions). Testing is provided on campus and is at no out-of-pocket cost to families and employees. All individuals learning or working on campus must consent to participate in the weekly on-campus testing.

Insurance Note:

If you are a parent or employee who tests weekly with Turning Point through FLOW Health or PMH Labs, please note that due to the CARES Act, you may receive an Explanation of Benefits from your insurance company which may be mistaken for a bill. Neither FLOW Health nor PMH will bill you for any out-of-pocket expenses, even if the insurance company dies your claim.

Distancing

Public Health continues to recommend distancing as deemed appropriate by the school. The school will continue to follow public health mandates and distance to the extent appropriate for each space and situation.

Sick Policy & Daily Wellness Checks

All community members must stay home if sick, regardless of vaccination status.

All students are required to complete a daily Wellness Screening. Students’ Wellness Screening must be completed via the SchoolPass app each morning prior to arriving on campus.

Contact Tracing

If a student or faculty/staff member tests positive for COVID-19, Turning Point follows the protocol below from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) Exposure Management Plan:

  • Instruct the individual who tested positive (“case”) or their parents to follow COVID-19 Home Isolation Instructions.

  • Inform the individual/parents that LACDPH will contact them directly to collect additional information.

  • Work with the individual and school staff to identify school-related close contacts (see “Identifying Close Contacts” below).

  • Notify school-related close contacts of exposure.

Identifying Close Contacts

In the event a member of the Turning Point community tests positive for COVID-19, the school will initiate a contact tracing process to identify all close contacts of the person who tested positive. Please note:

  • A close contact is identified as anyone who was within 6 feet of a positive case indoors for 15 minutes or longer during a 24-hour period.

  • Close contacts may also include individuals across grade levels who share space in activities such as Middle School Electives, After Care, and athletics.

Note: Starting 2/7/2022, we will no longer consider outdoor recess time when determining close contacts.

Notification of Positive Cases

In the event of a positive case on campus:

  • In the event of a positive case, the school will notify all individuals (or parents in the case of students) who are deemed to be close contacts via email.

  • The school will also send an email notification to the entire community (parents/caregivers and faculty/staff) notifying them that there was a positive case on campus.

  • To the extent possible, Turning Point will treat identifying information of individuals and families as confidential, unless disclosure is required to complete effective contact tracing.

  • Turning Point must submit a report to LACDPH within one business day with information on the confirmed case and anyone who was exposed to the case on campus.

Quarantine Policy for Close Contacts (ECD-8)

UPDATED 4/21/2022

  • Health Department Protocols DO NOT require any close contacts on-campus to quarantine, regardless of vaccine status.

  • In the event of exposure to a positive case, students and faculty/staff must wear a mask indoors for five days and test negative in order to remove their mask.

    • A close contact is identified as anyone who was within 6 feet of a positive case indoors for 15 minutes or longer during a 24-hour period.

  • The school will continue to alert parents to any possible exposure in all cases.

How Booster Shots Impact Vaccination Status

UPDATED 1/20/2022

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has updated its language regarding vaccinations and a booster shot if eligible:

  • For anyone who received the Pfizer shot (which includes those under the age of 18), the booster should be administered 5 months after the second dose, per these guidelines.

  • Turning Point will provide a 30-day grace period for families to have their child boosted once the child is eligible.

  • If your child is eligible for a booster shot and 30 days have passed since the date of eligibility, your child will not be considered up to date with vaccinations for the purposes of quarantine.

Sibling Policy

  • Siblings of students who have tested positive for COVID-19 must isolate as a close contact for the duration of the quarantine (seven days from last contact with a negative COVID test on Day five).

  • Students who have a family member who has been identified as a close contact (where the student themself has not been a close contact) may come to school as usual.

  • In both these instances, we ask that students stay separate in the household to the greatest extent possible, which we do recognize is difficult.

  • Teachers in grade levels that are not fully quarantined will assess/communicate essential needs but are not able to offer a full remote program because they are running in-person instruction.

  • If families self-elect to keep all siblings home, teachers in grade levels that are not in quarantine will assess/communicate essential needs but are not able to offer a full remote program because they are running in-person instruction.

Off-Campus Exposure Policy

Parents/caregivers are expected to inform the school if their child has been exposed to COVID off-campus. Should your child be exposed off-campus:

If your child is fully vaccinated (and boosted, if eligible):

  • They may return on Day 4 with a negative PCR test taken on Day 3, assuming they are asymptomatic

  • The county also requires a second test on Day 5 which families can obtain through FLOW Health if Day 5 does not fall on a regular Turning Point testing day

If your child is not fully vaccinated and boosted (if eligible):

  • They may return Day 8 with a negative PCR test on Day 5 or later

After School Activities

Currently, the only in-person after-school activities available for students are After Care and Middle School Fall Sports (which fall under the Youth Sports guidelines).

After Care and After School Classes are grouped by:

  • All Early Childhood students

  • K-1 students

  • 2-4 students

  • All Middle School students

* After Care takes place in indoor/outdoor settings and face coverings are always worn except during snack or when students are drinking.

Middle School Athletics are indoor and outdoor, and groupings are determined by the students participating.

*During athletics, for close contact sports, masks are worn to the greatest extent possible.

Please keep in mind that when students are mixing with others beyond their grade level cohort, any extra-curricular activity your child engages in, on-campus or off-campus, increases the chances that they may be exposed to COVID-19 and/or need to quarantine in the event of exposure.

Academic Support During Quarantine

  • In the event an individual student needs to quarantine due to exposure to COVID-19, Turning Point will assess what is needed to keep the child up-to-date and provide remote support in the form of asynchronous work through digital tools such as email, Veracross, and Google Classroom.

  • In the event an entire group is quarantined, Turning Point will use its Remote Learning Hubs to list group Zooms and/or provide asynchronous work as listed above for any classes that are not conducive to Zoom sessions.

Handwashing, Disinfection, and Ventilation

Practicing and reinforcing illness-prevention behaviors such as handwashing and cough/sneeze etiquette continue to be key strategies in slowing the spread of infectious diseases.

  • Students and faculty/staff are instructed to continue handwashing and sanitizing often.

  • Students and faculty use outdoor portable handwashing stations to wash hands with soap and water in outdoor areas and sanitize hands using the school's outdoor hand sanitizing stations.

  • Shared surfaces and objects in classrooms and on campus will be cleaned and disinfected frequently throughout the day, including full room disinfection using our electrostatic disinfectant mister.

  • The school overhauled its HVAC systems and filters last year.

Visitor Policy

Turning Point is only welcoming visitors to campus in very limited circumstances. All visitors to campus are required to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test within the last 48 hours. All such visits must be arranged and calendared in advance. Families that need to drop off necessary items can do so at arrival or dismissal or with the Security Officer on duty.

CDC Travel Guidelines

Families and faculty/staff are asked to please be aware of the CDC Guidelines regarding travel. There are different expectations for unvaccinated and vaccinated persons returning from travel.

  • Health departments continue to urge at least a seven-day quarantine for unvaccinated people after travel. Please plan accordingly.

  • Vaccinated persons are not required to quarantine.

Please see this email sent on 8/2/21 for additional details.

Vaccination Policy

EMPLOYEES: All employees must have proof of full vaccination on file with Turning Point’s Human Resources department. All employees who are eligible for a booster shot must be fully boosted as well.

STUDENTS: The Pfizer vaccine is now widely available for children ages 5-11, and the school strongly encourages families to pursue vaccination for children as quickly as possible. The school will likely require the COVID-19 vaccine for all students ages 12 and older once it receives full FDA approval. Once a child is fully vaccinated, they must have proof of vaccination uploaded to the Magnus Health app. Instructions can be found here.

Find a vaccine location near you:

Parents may also want to check with their pediatrician as the vaccine should also be available from doctors’ offices.

Informing the School of Vaccination Updates

Once your child is up to date with their COVID-19 vaccinations, you must submit proof of vaccination so that we can keep quarantine lists current:

  • Submit proof of vaccination/booster through the Magnus App. These instructions will take you through the required steps to upload results.

  • Send a note to Ms. Jay Brown Jackson, so that she is aware of the change and can update our quarantining protocol lists.
