Festival of the Arts

A highlight of the Level 5 school year, Mock Trial allows students to participate in a simulated case, playing the roles of jurors, attorneys for the prosecution and the defense, the defendants, and even the judge. With the help of Turning Point School parents in the legal profession we run through a full trial in a real Chatsworth courthouse. Teachers use the trial as an extension of Social Studies and History classes. Themes from class weave into the trial, and lessons learned at the courthouse are brought back into the classroom. By experiencing the process of a judicial case, students have the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of the law as well as their oratory and problem-solving skills. Students get a first hand look at how societal factors can affect the judicial system—an insight that a textbook can never fully illustrate.
