The courses run daily from 3:15-4:15 pm and are taught by Turning Point teachers and outside professionals.

Athletics

Beginning Sports
(Primary ONLY)
This class is designed to allow the Primary student a comfortable atmosphere to explore the world of sports. Basic skill level sports will be taught and safe interactive games will be played. Students will develop spatial awareness, hand-to-eye coordination, and social skills working with new and old friends.

Sports Nuts!

If you are crazy about sports and want to improve your skills, then join Coach Colley and Coach Snyder on Fridays after school. Through team oriented and individualized drills, students will learn and practice a variety of sports including football, basketball, soccer, handball, and many more! Students will also have the opportunity to scrimmage and display their newly learned techniques while gaining a better understanding of gameplay and sportsmanship.

K-1 Sports Club

The Sports Club is designed to allow students who enjoy running, throwing, kicking, and generally having a good time on the playing field to begin to learn the games we play. We'll work on individual skills, learn rules and strategy for many games, and spend a great deal of time playing those games. In the process, we'll stay active, make new friends, and strengthen old friendships.

Cooking with children is something we love to do and we're always in search of healthy and fun recipes that kids love! To keep everyone safe in the kitchen, we provide developmentally appropriate activities for our youngest chefs, while challenging those who are a bit older and have more experience in the kitchen. Big Mac!

Do you like spending time on the computer? In "Big Mac," students will use Macintosh computers (located in Turning Point's Mac Lab) in order to create digital comics, compose music, edit video, design 3D models, and more. "Big Mac" is a great way to learn valuable skills and have lots of fun using amazing technology. *NOTE: Students who have already taken Big Mac are welcome to sign up, however, priority for registration will be given to students who have not previously enrolled in this class.

Calling all young inventors and digital artists! Exercise your creativity and problem solving skills in this one-of-a-kind, state-of-the-art classroom. Students will build their technological capacities through a wide variety of topics ranging from graphic design, to working with solar power, to stop-motion-animation and much, much more. Students are also introduced to the idea of creating an electronic portfolio. All projects are student driven and the scope of the material covered depends on the students' experience and the level of his or her work ethic.

Chess

This is a class for beginners and advanced students alike! In a fun but focused environment, we will learn and practice the fundamentals of chess. Chess vocabulary, movement of pieces, and board set-up will be explored in an age appropriate and creative manner. We will strive to play by all the rules, learn basic strategies, and enjoy friendly competition. Upon completion of the class, each student will receive his or her own chess board for further independent play and practice.

New Class! Survivor Scouts
(Levels 3-5)
Survivor Scouts is a class your child will never forget! This fun course is an adventure into the world of survival skills. Children will begin the course by learning how to create their own survival pack. We will learn how to make a basic shelter and start a fire from leaves, sticks, and other basic materials. Students will make solar ovens and water filters and will learn which native plants are edible and which are dangerous. Other activities include knot tying, wilderness first aid, making compasses, and pitching tents. We'll also share ghost stories and s'mores. Our class will end with a visit from a naturalist who will teach us how to make rope from plants. Join us for an excursion through the wild!

Take a step back in time to 245 million years ago, when the dinosaurs ruled the earth, and join us as we learn about these colossal creatures. Our archaeologists will explore the dinosaurs of the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods, and what these roaming giants ate, where they lived, and how they lived. We will be making our very own dinosaur eggs, building our own models of dinosaur skeletons, and much more. Come join us for a "roaring" good time as we have some dinosaur adventures!

New Class! Kids Who Care
(Levels 1-4)
Develop compassion and the spirit of service, philanthropy, and responsibility. This class provides young people with hands-on volunteer opportunities to help others throughout their local and global communities. Through activities such as Kids Care Book Share, and Team Up for Kids in Foster Care, Kids Who Care will help the elderly, hungry, homeless, disabled, sick, and victims of disasters. Possible projects include doggy blankets for the humane society, Bingo prizes for Senior Centers, Giggle Bags for children in the hospital, and teddy bears for foster children.

Our amigos will have the opportunity to expand their current español knowledge through storybooks, learning sight words, enhancing comprehension, and expressing complete thoughts in the target language. Each session will focus on vocabulary relating to holidays and everyday vocabulary that will allow the amigo to make home and school connections. Our amigos will bring home a new book and activity after every session, allowing our padres the opportunity to practice and learn with our amigos.

Performing Arts - Theatre

INTRO to Theatre: It's Showtime!

An Introduction to theatre, "It's Showtime!" is appropriate for both new students to the class and returnees! We will use theatre games and warm-ups to build our theatre skills, and we will turn familiar stories into a play to practice telling the story with more than just our words. (The stories used will be different each semester, so no fear for those repeating the class!)

After School Players
(Levels 3-5)
Students who enroll will have the opportunity to perform in a fully scripted and realized production of "Free to Be…You and Me." This play involves SINGING and ACTING. Each student will have a part in the play, unless he/she chooses to work exclusively backstage. Students will be involved in creating, building, and painting various prop and set elements. Please note that all classes are 90 minutes. The final performance for family and friends will be on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at 5:00 pm. Additional rehearsals are scheduled as needed, and all students will be required to attend dress rehearsals on Monday 4/30, Tuesday 5/1, and Wednesday 5/2. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Let's get ready to rock! In this class, we will learn about the history of Rock and Roll music starting with Robert Johnson in the 1920's and continuing through until today! We will listen to music and watch music videos from rock greats like Buddy Holly, The Beatles, The Who, Grateful Dead, and many more. We will discuss how this music fit with the major changes happening in society.

Ladies and Gentlemen, The Beatles! Take a journey back to the 60's and experience the worldwide craze of Beatlemania. Sing along with John and Paul, strum along with George, and drum along with Ringo, as we learn to play and sing Beatles songs. Our fans will take a magical mystery tour of Abbey Road, the famous recording studio, and record some Beatles songs with their own voices using the Garage Band program. The semester will conclude with your very own copy of the class album filled with songs, interviews, and other recordings. Join us for tea and biscuits as we learn more about these Liverpool lads!

Breathe, move, sweat, and groove! This class mixes vinyasa flow with rockin' music to give students a fun introduction to yoga. We will learn various poses, meditation, and breathing, all set to music. Yoga is great exercise and reduces stress. This class is appropriate for students who have never taken yoga and for those with some experience. Students will not need to provide their own yoga mat.

If you love to make a huge mess…then this is the perfect hands-on class for you! Throughout this semester, we will use our hands to make lots of ooey gooey experiments. Our little experimenters will make oobleck, slime, silly putty and much more. Join us as we put our thinking caps on and construct some of the most intelligent robots…out of Legos! This class will be loads of fun as we explore the basics of building and programming our robots to challenging and competing with them. We'll make them walk, talk, and run obstacle courses. There's really no limit to what we can do!

Advanced Sculpture

This class is designed for children with previous experience working with clay. Warning: we will get dirty! We will explore the use of different sculpting tools, texturizing the surface of clay for magical effects, and how to use a variety of techniques to enhance our projects. We will work from the real to the abstract using special paints and finishes. Other media, such as wood, plaster and core board, will also be explored. At all times, our goal is to create and express with support and confidence.

This is no ordinary craft class! From papier mâché picture frames to jewelry making, your child will have a blast while being exposed to a variety of art mediums. Our class will wrap up with a craft expo, where student work will be on display for all to admire. Let's get creative!

Arts and Crafts classes are a fun way to promote creativity in kids. It allows children to bring their expressive thoughts and ideas into reality. We'll be designing flower pots and potting flowers in them when they're done. Designing shirts and painting birdhouses are just a few of the crafts that we'll be doing in class. Sewing is a valuable and practical skill that leads to a rewarding hobby. In this class we will learn and explore the steps to design and create your own pillows, stuffed animals, aprons, and much more! All classes meet from 3:15-4:15 pm unless otherwise noted. Regular class enrollment minimum is six students, eight students for athletic classes, except where noted. Class enrollment maximum has been determined by each individual teacher--please see course descriptions.
