The after-school enrichment program offers a diverse selection of classes during two twelve-week sessions each school year.
The courses run daily from 3:15-4:15 p.m. and are taught by Turning Point teachers and outside professionals..

Athletics
Classes are conducted by Mr. Kirk Holguin, an instructor from United Studios of Self Defense (USSD), "America's Self Defense Leader." USSD is the largest professional organization of its type in the United States and has been teaching students since 1968. Through training in the Martial Arts, children will develop confidence, strong self-discipline, and a healthy self-image. We will be teaching the techniques required for belt advancement, as well as incorporating themes from the "Street Smart Kids" and "Bully Proofing" programs. Materials fee includes the cost for the karate uniform, t-shirt, DVD/book, and final testing.

This class is designed to allow the primary student a comfortable atmosphere to explore the world of sports. Basic skill level sports will be taught and safe interactive games will be played. Students will develop spatial awareness, hand-to-eye coordination and social skills working with new and old friends.

If you are crazy about sports and want to improve your skills, then join Coach Colley and Mr. Reynolds on Fridays after school. Through team oriented and individualized drills, students will learn and practice a variety of sports including football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and many more! Students will also have the opportunity to scrimmage and display their newly learned techniques while gaining a better understanding of gameplay and sportsmanship.

The Sports Klub is designed to allow students who enjoy running, throwing, kicking, and generally having a good time on the playing field to begin to learn the games we play. We'll work on individual skills, learn rules and strategy for many games, and spend a great deal of time playing those games. In the process, we'll stay active, make new friends, and strengthen old bonds.

Culinary Arts
Cooking with children is something we love to do and we're always in search of healthy and fun recipes that kids love! To keep everyone safe in the kitchen, we provide developmentally appropriate activities for our youngest chefs, while challenging those who are a bit older and have more experience in the kitchen. Our goal is to give children the opportunity to participate at their level while teaching them about foods and flavors to fit their fancy. Get those spatulas, whisks and oven mitts ready . . . Let's Cook!

Challenge your palate with new and interesting food combinations and be comforted with family favorites. Join us for a food challenge! Students will learn about ingredients, portions, and how to prepare and cook amazing dishes. Along with learning the techniques of cooking, students will also learn how to make their own personalized recipe book. We'll learn about spices and what they are used for, along with different types of vegetables, fruits, and pairings to make a delicious meal for friends and family! Students will have the chance to get creative and will be challenged to a cook off with their fellow chefs in the class. It's a challenge they won't want to miss. Put on your aprons and let's cook!

Digital Arts
Do you like spending time on the computer? In "Big Mac," students will use individual Macintosh computers, located in Turning Point's amazing new computer lab. We will create digitalized comic books, produce original music, and edit student-created videos. "Big Mac" is a great way to learn valuable skills and have lots of fun using our amazing new technology.

Lights, camera, action! Welcome to the first-ever TPTV (Turning Point Television). Students will conduct on-campus interviews, report sports scores, highlight local weather, and share current events. We will write and perform sit-com skits, create commercials and much more. The class will meet in Turning Point's brand new media room, complete with green screen, dual action video cameras, and real time editing. Wow!

Games and Imagination
Imagine huge bins of LEGOS of all shapes and sizes! No tedious instructions, no preconceived plans…the only limit is your imagination. The best part is you can take your creation home after each class. Mr. Kline has collected thousands of pre-owned LEGOS and he's ready to share. Join him for a relaxing hour of free building.

This is a class for beginning and advanced students alike! In a fun but focused environment, we will start by learning and practicing the fundamentals of chess. Chess vocabulary, movement of pieces, and board set-up will be explored in an age appropriate and creative manner. Later, we will strive to play by all the rules and finish the class with basic strategies, including openings and gambits. Upon completion of the class, each student will receive his or her own chess board for further independent play and practice.

Humanities
Learning a language can be hard, but learning it through cultural paths is quite an experience! Students will enjoy learning Spanish through various avenues that allow hands-on activities, with weekly centers including Story Maker, Seek the Sound, and Food Find – to name a few. These centers will allow your child to explore the language with everyday activities and experiences, making connections by naturally relating foreign language concepts. So, join in the aventuras of Latin America.

Performing Arts
Theatre
Make a grand entrance into theatre and discover how to express yourself in the arts! The focus is on the process rather than the product as students participate in dramatic play, story enactment, imagination journeys, theatre games, music, and movement. The class will develop oral language and problem-solving skills, social awareness, and an understanding of the art of theatre. An informal performance will take place on Tuesday, December 14th at 4:30 p.m. Students are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to take this class prior to participating in an after-school play. If you previously took It's Showtime, you are welcome to take this class again to expand your theatrical skills.

This is a year-long class that culminates in a full production in May 2011! We are implementing a new format that combines the production class with past classes such as Costume Crew and Prop Shop. Students will be involved in designing the show, as well as building various prop and costume elements. Each student who enrolls will have a part in the play, unless he/she chooses to work exclusively backstage. Please note that all classes are 90 minutes. The play's title will be announced in September. The final performance for family and friends will be on Thursday, May 5 at 5:00pm. Please note that additional rehearsals will be required Monday 5/2, Tuesday 5/3, and Wednesday 5/4. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis and is open to students in Levels 4 and 5, and Level 3 students who have completed It's Showtime and/or Young Theatre courses.

Music
The Rock/Jazz Band will focus on developing pieces for an informal concert at the end of the semester. Young musicians who would like to further develop their skills and learn new music, as well as sight-reading, improvisation, and basic musicianship skills, should take this class. Open to all students who currently study an instrument.

Come and have lots of fun with singing, playing and moving in Mr. Bersanetti’s class. Children will enjoy songs and games to enrich and strengthen their musicality through story telling, play and dramatization. This class will explore the world of sound and literacy, and enhance cultural awareness and appreciation of music in all its creative forms, while nurturing musical discovery as our friends “find their voices.”

Dance
Hula is one of the most important cultural arts of Hawaii. Through movement, hula tells of the history, legends, and beauty of the islands. Each week, students will be introduced to techniques of century-old movement and dance. This class teaches grace, flexibility, and coordination utilizing a diverse array of songs. A wonderful cultural experience combining music, movement and dance!

The fundamentals of old and new-school hip hop dance. Skills include popping, locking, waving, tutting, ticking, freestyling and breakdancing in precisely choreographed routines. We will have an end of session performance to show off your skillz! No previous dance experience is required (Knee pads recommended and tennis shoes/sneakers required.) All music and choreography strictly age appropriate.

*So Fly Instructor Tim Fahey has been teaching and choreographing all levels of Hip Hop dance throughout Los Angeles – from elementary schools to master/professional dancer training. His choreography has been seen on stage, film and TV and has worked with numerous artists including Omarion, Missy Elliot, Ginuwine and “We Are Heroes” (winners of America’s Best Dance Crew Season 5)..
Basic gymnastics and dance technique, combining ballet, jazz, hip-hop, tumbling/floor work, and balance beam skills. Achieve balance, coordination, strength and flexibility while building a great foundation for more advanced gymnastics, dance, and other sports! We will have an informal performance for friends and family at the end of the session.

So Fly instructors have been classically trained at some of the top dance studios, companies and gyms around the world with choreography and performances that can be seen on film, music videos and television including VH-1 and MTV. Most importantly, our instructors have extensive experience working with children and thrive on teaching proper technique while making dance and gymnastics fun.
If you love to groove, then Hype it up in dance class! You'll learn how to create your own style of hip hop while grooving to your favorite pop tune. Hip Hop has been a part of American culture since 1969. In today's world, hip hop is a popular form of art seen in many music videos. In this class, you'll learn choreography, expression, and how to dance in a real music video. You'll also learn to work as a professional on set. The final performance will include making a video, along with preparing costumes, props, hair and make-up. Ready, set, action!

Are you a "tinker?" Do you want to learn how things work? This class is designed for the curious child who is eager to learn about flight. From parachute projects to aircraft to water rockets, you will create "Things That Fly!" Join us and learn what it's like to soar through the skies like the Wright Brothers, with hands-on activities that allow you to explore infinity and beyond!

This hands-on class comes complete with live, child-friendly animals. Each week, students handle a new animal or animals, such as snakes, lizards, furry critters, birds and farm animals. In this fun and gentle learning environment, students discover the featured animal through a variety of stories, games, and related art projects.

Interested in computer programming, engineering, LEGOS, or robots? If you said "yes" to any of those, this is definitely the class for you! Join us as we put our thinking caps on and construct some of the most intelligent robots, out of LEGOS. This class will be loads of fun as we explore the basics of building and programming our robots to challenging and competing with them. We'll make them walk, talk, and run obstacle courses. There's really no limit to what you can do!

Discover the potential of robotics in this exciting new class where the worlds of technology and biology collide. In this intermediate level class, students will learn interesting facts about a variety of animals from peacocks to elephants. Using our prior work with LEGO Mindstorms as a foundation, we will recreate these magnificent animals. Students in Levels 4 and 5 must have taken Robotics 101 to register for this class.

If you love to make a huge mess…then this is the perfect hands-on class for you! Throughout this semester, we will use our hands to make lots of ooey gooey experiments. Our little experimenters will make oobleck, slime, silly putty and much more. Each child will participate in the making of the project, have a chance to work with the material, and take a sample home to keep. Beware! You must be willing to have fun and get your hands dirty!

Visual Arts
Monsters high, monsters low, monsters everywhere we go. This class will explore all types of monsters, from the beloved book, Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, and the current film, to Jim Henson's Muppets and the mythological lore of monsters. We will explore expressions of our own wild imaginations as a group and, individually, we will make paintings, drawings, finger puppets and dolls.

Let's look through the lens of art history to explore, take apart, retell and make art. There is a story to be told and artist Judy Chicago has done so in her significant historical art installation: The Dinner Party. Together, we will explore the rich lives of astronomers, artists, writers, scientists, mystics, poets and legendary figures invited to the Dinner Party. Join Ms. Greco in a unique experience working with clay, wood, core board and stones to sculpt your favorite creations. Students will learn how to use different sculpting tools to help join their pieces together and also how to texturize the surface of clay for magical effects. They will choose their favorite animal to sculpt from clay and will use a variety of techniques to enhance their creations. Using special paints and finishes, we will complete our projects. Children will gain confidence through self-expression and expand their creative ideas while sharing with other classmates. There will be individual instruction so that the children can uncover their talents in sculpture.

Registration for Winter/Spring classes begins on Friday, January 8th. Please mail or drop off your registration form and payment in an envelope. Please complete your enrollment and payment by Thursday, January 14th 2010. As some classes close due to maximum enrollment, please indicate alternate choices. Enrollment is on a first-come-first-serve basis.
All classes meet from 3:15 - 4:15 PM unless otherwise noted. Regular class enrollment minimum is six students, eight students for athletic classes, except where noted. Class enrollment maximum has been determined by each individual teacher--please see course descriptions.
