Science

Science is introduced through exploration and observation of nature and everyday experience.
k-1 Thematic units present an overall foundation for later in-depth study. Units such as rain forest integrated into other study areas.
2nd Three to four specific units are developed at each grade level to study in depth, each corresponding to thematic material in social science, language and math. Examples are:
(2) dolphins and whales with Nine True Dolphin Stories
(3) archaeology with Native CA history
(4) ocean systems with New World Exploration
(5) human body with human development

Emphasis on experiential learning.

8th Physical Science and Chemistry
Integrated study of physical systems such as human anatomy.
Science Fair

Art isn't the only opportunity for students to show off their work at Turning Point School. Students in Levels 3, 4, and 5 work on independent research in areas of science that are most interesting to them – from endangered species to microgravity to global warming. The projects tie into the science curriculum but aren't bound by it. Students are responsible for researching the project, absorbing and integrating the information they gather, and producing creative presentations to illustrate their learning. The fair coincides with the whole school's celebration of Earth Day, and everyone — including parents — leaves with a renewed interest in science, thanks to the hard work of the students.
