study. Wright Group Sourcebook and Daybook.
Emphasis is on continued development of grammatical
understanding and usage, vocabulary and word
relationship, phonics, structural analysis, context, and
comprehension. Sentence structure is further
strengthened as students move into the development of
paragraph and paper construction. Advancement
through the writing genres (biography and autobiography,
friendly and business letters, expository essay and
research, creative narrative and poetry) is accomplished
through developmentally considered practice at each
grade level.
Skills in reading to acquire knowledge are strengthened
through practice in core subject matter (science, math,
history) and through core literature selected to enhance
understanding of people and their cultures, historically
and geographically. Literature genres, author voice,
audience, and purpose bind together understanding of
spoken and written word.
Practice in reading and writing is incorporated into all subject areas. |

Designed to encourage not only reading skills, but reading comprehension, the Drop Everything and Read program also builds connections within Turning Point's extended school "families." Students from all grade levels as well as school faculty and staff members form these family units which come together to celebrate the joys of reading in what could be accurately described as an all-ages book club. Families read (the youngest students are read to) a range of age-appropriate books pertaining to a particular theme—such as the immigrant experience. They then hold open discussions about the books, encouraging each of our students to offer unique insights garnered from his/her reading.
