Citizenship & Ethics

Development of responsible and caring citizens who know how to meet the social and ethical challenges of their world is an integral part of daily instruction and play. Beginning in Primary and continuing throughout Elementary and Middle School, students are guided, through curriculum, open discussion, roleplaying, and adult modeling, to become integrated individuals and thoughtful of themselves, of others and of the environment. Depending on individual and group needs and development, focus is on respect, selfdiscipline, awareness of others, responsibility, commitment, kindness, trustworthiness, commitment, citizenship, and leadership.

Projects and activities in service learning help students develop a sense of commitment to their immediate, local and extended communities, while encouraging a sense of participation and belonging.

In the midst of our nation's capital, level 8 students witness lessons learned in history and social studies first hand. Students visit landmarks that put historical figures in context and view the historical documents that shaped our nation. The Holocaust Museum and the Smithsonian offer insight into some of humankind's darkest moments and greatest accomplishments. Through trips to the Capitol Building, Supreme Court, and other sites, students gain a first-hand account of how our government work together to develop policy affecting the communities with and beyond this country. While in the District, students will see, hear, feel, touch, smell, and taste the effects of strong citizenship in action. Students return energized to support issues they find to be important themselves.
